Booking Through Thursday

Today’s question for this meme:  What animal-related books have you read? Which do you love? Do you have a favorite literary dog? (Snoopy, anyone?)

This was such an easy question for me to answer.  My mind immediately drifted back to fifth grade and my wonderful teacher Mrs. Pedan.  She read “Where the Red Fern Grows” to the class.  I remember the day that we were going to finish the book.  As my class waited in the hallway, nervously anticipating the ending, the previous class began to leave. I remember that everyone was crying had sad expressions.  I couldn’t imagine “that” ending in my mind.  Needless to say…..I cried and cried.  To this day it is still one of my favorite books.

As a teacher, I often find it challenging to motivate my students to read.  They are bombarded with video games, computers, ipads and other technology that in their mind reduces a book to a boring concept.  I did however reach two groups, one with this same book I listened to. (The other group was intrigued by the Percy Jackson series.)  They were captivated by the story and want to know all about Old Dan and Little Ann.  One parent told me that the book was the only reason her son wanted to come to school.  (He actually missed the last day because he was sick, and I let him borrow the book.)

(FYI:  I loved Snoopy too!  I had snoopy sheets and tons of stuffed animals. I guess all of this could explain why I am such a “dog” person!
